Sunflower Pattern
Center of Sunflower (make 2 circles)
Start with a magic circle:
- Loop yarn around your fingers to form an X, pull the loop out, insert the hook through this loop, and pull your working yarn through to form a magic circle. Chain 1 to secure.
Round 1:
- Into the magic circle: Chain 1 (counts as part of this round, not as a stitch), then make 5 single crochet (SC) stitches inside the circle. Close the circle tightly.
Round 2:
- Work in spirals starting on top of the first SC: Increase by making 2 SC in each stitch all around. You will have 10 SC at the end.
For Round 3:
- Pattern 1 SC, 1 increase (2 SC in the next stitch), repeat around. By the end, you should have 15 SC.
Round 4:
- Pattern is 1 SC in the first stitch, 1 SC in the next stitch, and then an increase in the third stitch. Repeat around to have a total of 20 SC.
- Slip stitch to the first SC of the round to close, then cut off your yarn.
Joining the Center Parts:
- Place the two circles wrong sides together, ready to attach the petals.
Petals Pattern
- Attach Yellow Yarn: With the size G (4 mm) crochet hook, join yellow yarn by pulling it through both circles starting from any stitch.
- Petal Pattern: In the same stitch, chain 1 (for height), then start petal as follows in the same stitch - make a double crochet (DC), a triple crochet (TC), chain 2, slip stitch into the top of the TC (creating a picot), then make another TC and a DC into the same stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch to finish the petal.
- Repeat for each Petal: Repeat the petal pattern around both circles until you have made a total of 10 petals. Join with a slip stitch and cut off the yarn.
Leaf Pattern
- Start with Green Yarn: Make a slip knot leaving a long tail for sewing. Chain 10.
Leaf Shaping:
- Skip the first chain from the hook, slip stitch in the second chain.
- Single crochet in the next 2 chains.
- Half double crochet in the next 2 chains.
- Double crochet in the next 2 chains, then 2 double crochets in the second last chain.
- In the very last chain, make 4 double crochets, turning the work to mirror your stitches along the other side to finish the leaf shape.
- Once completed, cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing.
Assembly
- Sew the leaf to one of the circles before attaching the circles together.
- If using as a keychain, attach the key ring to the sunflower.
- For a car hanger, replace the key ring step with attaching a long crochet chain to the sunflower for hanging.
